Senator Royce West Act

Senator Royce West Act

I was honored to author and pass legislation repealing the discriminatory & unconstitutional provisions that still remain in Texas real property records, including existing deed restrictions written decades ago that prevent “blacks” or “negroes” or “slaves” or other minorities from residing in certain neighborhoods. These restrictions are shocking, not to mention blatantly unconstitutional – but until this bill was passed there was no way for the deeds and other records to be revised. We’ve worked on this together for a long time – and it’s a great victory for ALL the people of Texas as we stand against bigotry, hate, racism, and discrimination.

Notably, the House voted unanimously to name the bill the “Senator Royce West Act” after its Senate author, Royce West, who has worked so valiantly on this and many other issues over the years. He and I disagree on a whole lot – but we were united in this effort, and it was an honor to work with him on this important legislation.
